LNSO, PELTOKOSKI, STRAUSS, AND SCHNITTKE

The Latvian National Symphony Orchestra (LNSO)

Darja SMIRNOVA, Georg SARKISJAN – violin

Conductor Tarmo PELTOKOSKI

Programme:

  • Richard STRAUSS Symphonic poem Don Juan
  • Richard STRAUSS Symphonic fantasy from the opera Die Frau ohne Schatten (The Woman without a Shadow)
  • Alfred SCHNITTKE Concerto Grosso no. 3 for Two Violins and Orchestra
  • Richard STRAUSS Der Rosenkavalier (The Knight of the Rose)

In this concert, we will once again meet Tarmo Peltokoski, the Music and Artistic Director of the orchestra, whom the audience has already come to know and love in the autumn-winter season. We will take a close look at Richard Strauss' symphonic opuses: the portrayal of Don Juan will reveal new nuances about the insatiable lover (compared to his depiction by Mozart a century earlier); the symbolic work The Woman without a Shadow was described by the composer himself as "the last Romantic opera", while The Knight of the Rose evokes 18th century Vienna through a prism of comedy and exaggerated melancholy. In Alfred Schnittke's Third Concerto Grosso, we will witness a musical clash between history and the present, starring concertmaster of the Latvian National Symphony Orchestra Georg Sarkisjan and violinist Darja Smirnova.

Finansed by European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and  Ventspils State City Municipality.
