Orion. Elza Siliņa & Liepāja Symphony Orchestra
An evening where the energy of youth, the sparkle of the stars, and musical pieces that continue to inspire audiences worldwide will come together. Latvian new-generation violinist Elza Siliņa, together with the Liepāja Symphony Orchestra and conductor Guntis Kuzma, will perform one of the most beautiful and beloved violin concertos—Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy's Violin Concerto. The program also features a special event: the premiere of Selga Mence's new work "Orion," while the evening will conclude with Jean Sibelius's majestic Second Symphony.
Elza Siliņa is one of the brightest Latvian violinists of the new generation. Her playing captivates with its energy, sincerity, and confidence. On stage, she charms with her presence and her ability to draw listeners into the world of music. Elza is able to equally convincingly reveal both the most delicate nuances of the music and its power, creating a special bond with the audience and making each performance a living and personal musical experience.
Felix Mendelssohn's Concerto for Violin and Orchestra is one of the most outstanding works of the Romantic era, having retained its place in the world's concert halls for nearly two centuries. In it, virtuosity intertwines with elegance, but technical brilliance never overshadows the emotional depth and singing beauty of the music.
The special event of the evening will be the premiere of Selga Mence's overture "Orion." The work was created specifically for this program and was inspired by one of the brightest constellations in the night sky. In the orchestra's sound, the world of stars will come to life with its mystery, light, and sense of infinity.
"Orion is one of the most recognizable and, in my opinion, most beautiful winter constellations. It captivates us in the night sky, and we often use it as a reference point when looking for other stars," says composer Selga Mence.
At the conclusion of the concert, Jean Sibelius's Second Symphony will be performed—one of the composer's most remarkable opuses. In it, one can hear both the grandeur of Nordic nature and human inner strength. The symphony's emotionally fulfilling and triumphant finale continues to move listeners worldwide, making this work one of the pinnacles of symphonic music.
The concert is organized by SIA “Kurzemes filharmonija” with the support of the Ventspils State City Municipality and the State Culture Capital Foundation.
